THE GAZE : THE MACHINE WITHOUT EYES
2020
Experimental audio-visual with Surveillance video and generative storytelling | Material: Neural Storyteller, Python and video editing software
The Gaze is an audio-visual installation that explores race, identity, surveillance, and power through the lens of "the border." The work features three synchronized screens: surveillance footage, AI-generated stories narrated by diverse voices, and headshots.
Created during the pandemic, the piece reflects on the rise of racism and xenophobia—amplified by media narratives and the widespread use of cameras. A personal experience of anti-Asian racism sparked the project, prompting an investigation into how surveillance culture shapes our understanding of identity and difference.
Themes of absence, boundaries, watching, chance, and violence guide the structure. Surveillance and news footage were categorized by theme and processed through Neural Storyteller and GPT-3 to generate the narrative texts.
